STUDIES OF DESIGN DEGREE

Description of the program of study

The law of education in Catalunya has created the Institut Superior de les Arts (ISA) as an autonomous organisation to implement the functions related specifically to the higher study of art practice. Its domains include: Dramatic Art, Dance, Music, Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage, and Design.

Escola Superior de Disseny i Arts Plàstiques (ESDAP) is a member school of the ISA. The Escola d'Art i superior de Disseny Pau Gargallo is one of the campuses in the ESDAP.

The new regulation of these studies includes the higher degree, master's degree and doctorate (which is taught in collaboration with the universities).

During the year 2010/2011, the art practice studies have been adapted to the Bologna Plan.

Our school offers the Design Degree in the speciality of Graphic Design.

The studies of design are directed to the design profession in the fields of Graphic Design, Interior Design, Product Design and Fashion Design.

The role of the designer in society demands a wide formation.
Design is a domain which involves arts and technology, culture, production and consumer culture. Therefore, the future designer needs to develop aesthetic values, but also cultural, social, and environmental values. Through innovation and responsible design, designers contribute to the idea of the welfare state in contemporary society, optimize resources and increase the efficiency and quality of new products.

The formation of these future professionals involves a network of different types of knowledge, such us scientific, social, technological, artistic and administrative knowledge, the development of technical capacities and skills, and the appropriate use of methods and processes related to design.

The designer conceives plans and controls the creative process by considering the following:

  • The theoretical and practical principles of design.
  • The project methodology.
  • The aesthetic, technical and technological languages.
  • The administration of projects.
  • Project management and collaboration with companies.

240 ECT (basic subjects, compulsory subjects, elective subjects, seminars, vocational training and final degree project)

During the first year, students receive a basic formation, common to all specialities taught at Pau Gargallo. During the second year they start to choose an itinerary with compulsory subjects related to their speciality. They will complete their studies throughout the four years with common subjects, elective subjects, interdisciplinary projects, vocational training, seminars and the final degree project.

Upon completion of the Design Degree, students gain access to the official Master's degree. During this Master's degree, students will shape the vocational or academic specialization and begin to research tasks in the field of design.

Compulsory speciality subjects:

Typography, Technology Applied to Graphic Design, History of Graphic Design, Graphic Design Studio, And Graphic Design Administration.

Job opportunities

The profile of the designer that follows these studies is that of a qualified professional who is capable of conceiving, promoting and documenting a creative process with a full command of the theoretical and practical principles of design and project methodology. Graduates are also capable of integrating different languages, techniques and technologies to their design practice.

The main professional fields for designers who have graduated from this program are: Corporate and Visual Identity, Publishing Design, Graphic Production, Package Design, Art Direction in Advertising, Audiovisual Design, Television Graphics, Multimedia Design, Interactive Design, Web Design, Environmental Design, Didactic Material Design, Research and Teaching.

Requirements to enter the Design Degree

Academic requirements: The process of vocational training, studios or workshops may consist of:
  • Baccalaureate studies in Spain.
  • Entrance examination for students who are 19 years or older.
  • University entrance examination for students who are 25 years or older.
In addition, students must pass an ESDAP entrance examination.

Students who hold an Associate's Degree/Technical Degree in Fine Arts may enter the program without condition.
